Looking for an Indian dish your kids will love? Try ‘Matar Paneer’ (Cheese & Pea Curry)

My eldest son went on a school trip to a Hindu Temple last week. On his return he proclaimed that it was the best trip he had been on and the curry that the temple served the kids for lunch was, ‘the most delicious thing he had ever tasted!’

Upon hearing this I set out to find the recipe for this dish! He said it was a vegetarian curry filled with yummy pieces of cheese and peas in a creamy red sauce, served on rice. I asked a good friend of mine if she had the recipe, and she did! 

Its a Punjabi dish called Matar Paneer, eaten mainly in Northern India. Its main ingredient is a special Indian cheese called ‘Paneer’ which you can buy in the cheese fridge in Waitrose. It is actually very simple to make, but the flavours of the spices mixed with the onion, ginger and cheese makes it a yummy cheesy vegetable stew.

I left out a few ingredients from the original recipe as I thought they would be a tad too spicy or strong for the kids. If you want to try a very mild curry which the kids will enjoy give this recipe a go!  

Ingredients – 

– 1 packet Paneer cheese (cut into 2cm cubes)

– 4 tablespoons vegetable oil 

– 1/2 jar Passata (or peel & chop 3 tomatoes

– 1 medium onion

– 1 cm of fresh ginger

– 500gr packet if frozen peas ( left to thaw)

– 1 tablespoon ground coriander 

– 1/4 teaspoon ground tumeric

– 2 teaspoons brown sugar

– Sea salt / ground pepper


– Chop the onion and ginger in a Food processor until very fine. Add 2 fluid ounces of water to the mix and blend again until it forms a paste.

– In a heavy bottomed saucepan heat the oil, then add the cubes of Paneer. Fry the Paneer until all the pieces are browned. Remove the cheese from the oil using a slotted spoon, and place in a separate dish.

– Now add the onion & ginger paste to this oil, mix on a medium heat until cooked.

– Next add the ground coriander and ground tumeric. Let the spices cook in for a few minutes. Mix well.

– Add the tomato Passata and sugar to balace out the acidity of the tomatoes. Cook and mix until the mixture browns and cooks.

– Add 15 fluid ounces of warm water to the sauce.

– Finally add the cooked Paneer and peas. Mix well and season with salt & pepper. Leave to simmer on a low heat for 10 minutes, or until peas are fully cooked.

Serve with boiled rice! Yummy! xxxxxx
