Homemade Nutella!

March 9, 2015

This morning I posted a picture of the ‘Nutella on the Go pots’ that my boys adore on my Facebook page. I got comments from friends telling me how unhealthy Nutella can be, packed with sugar and palm oil, so I decided to investigate and try to make a healthy homemade version.

Nutella has a lot of sugar in it! One serving, thats 2 tablespoons, has a huge 4 teaspoons of sugar in it!  Palm oil is another ingredient I didn’t know much about so I looked into it. There is a lot of informatin about palm oil out there, but the conclusion seems to be that this oil might have health benefits too, however, because it is processed when it goes into your store bought Nutella, it loses any nutrition it might have had.

In conclusion its best to avoid anything processed, or try to limit them, and instead make what you can at home, this way you know what you put in it, and you know what your kids are eating!

Store bought Nutella ingredients: sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skim milk, reduced minerals whey (milk), lecithin as emulsifier (soy), vanillin: an artificial flavor.

My Homemade Nutella Ingredients- (adapted from the cookbook Deliciously Ella)

– 2 mugs of  Hazelnuts or Almonds (Roasted then blended in food processor to form a nut butter)

– 1/2 mug of Maple Syrup or honey

– 3 tablespoons of Pure Cocoa powder (unsweetened)

Method –

Roast the nuts on a baking tray (lined with baking paper) at 200 degrees for ten minutes. Then put them in a food processor and blend for 10minutes until completely broken down. You might need to spin the processor a few times to get it really smooth. Add the cocoa powder and the honey or maple syrup to give it sweetness, and blend again until its completely blended. Finally gradually pour in 150ml of water and blend into a smooth paste.

So there it is, three wholesome and pure ingredients which we know and love make up this delicious alternative to Nutella!

The boys couldnt be happier as they got to have so much more of it than the tiny ‘Nutella Pot on the Go’ had in it, and had fun dipping strawberries, bananas and even grapes in the chocolatey sauce!

Enjoy! xxxxxx
